GIMP Clothing Tutorial by lycanthropeful GIMP Clothing Tutorial by lycanthropeful
This actually didn't take me as long as I thought! The final deviation will be uploaded once it's done, too. Sorry about the huge file - I still don't know how to post preview images! :rage:

Please, I'd appreciate any feedback! I've never made a tutorial before. I know people were curious as to how I went about shading clothes once I suggested, so I hope it helps. Enjoy! I'd love to know if anyone used my techniques in a deviation. =D

The tutorial and Sam are (C) =SaxGirl1010.

Eh, outdated or whatnot, I'm happy I found a clothing tutorial for GIMP. I suck at shading clothes, so it's useful. :3 You're welcome.

I'm sure you can apply this shading method to almost anything. It's a very simple method and is now outdated, in my opinion, but try it on what you'd like!

You're welcome, though this is old and may not be as helpful as I once thought. If you have questions or anything that I may be able to answer with a better grip on digital shading, please don't hesitate to ask!

I think you're confusing the difference between "layer" and "outlining." A layer is a, well, a "layer" that you can draw on. Then you can put layers underneath it that won't show through, or layers above it that will block it out.

I take it you don't have a graphics tablet? If not, you can try to ink in Photoshop on a separate layer (so you don't ruin your original drawing) with the Pen tool. It'll just take a long time, and you need a really steady hand with a mouse. ^^;

Here's a tutorial. Once again, this a GIMP tutorial, but it tells you how to use layers, specifically "Multiplying" layers. This way you draw stuff on a white piece of paper, then scan it, set the layer to "Multiply", and color underneath your lines.

Good luck. When you get back to school, ask me if you still need help. ;)

Yeah. As long as you played Variations on a Korean Folk Song without majorly screwing up (like, if you started playing Moulin Rouge at the vivace), then you passed. We even got to self-evaluate... :bored:

This is very helpful in contouring fabrics, I may just use it for jeans.

But when my dad returns with my laptop, I'm going to try (again) to download GIMP.

Too bad I've lost my tablet pen and can't do digital art for a while, but I would surely love to try this out the next time I do!!!
Ahhhh *_* Thank you for sharing your art talented secret with us! :glomp:

Aww, thanks. Hopefully this explains how my clothes look "as sharp as a slap in the face with the wet fish," to quote you.

You can always do digital art with a mouse... that's how I do it. :) You're so good at traditional art; I'd love to see more digital stuff from you!

Thanks for the comment and :+fav:. And actually, the final deviation features someone else. I just focused on Sam. It's a gift for another deviant. ;)

Wow, so many steps. o.o I don't know if I could do that (digital was never my best medium) This may also prove helpful in traditional drawing as well.

Remember, though, there are so many different ways and shortcuts to do all of the things above. I even thought of another way to put flat colors in after I finished the tutorial... :disbelief: but yeah, it can take a long time.

You'd probably do fine if you tried, and the GIMP is free to download here.

Thanks! =D

I like it a lot, and it's pretty clear and easy to follow. Now I just need to practice anatomy so I'll actually have things to draw clothes on. XD

Anyways, thank you for the :+fav:. I'm really glad that you thought it was clear. I was worried about it being too unorganized, and I tend to babble, as you know. :XD:

Thanks again!
